A cluster fly refers to various insects in the genus Pollenia, resembling regular houseflies but typically about 7mm long, black, with reddish eyes and hairy thoraxes. They fly more slowly than houseflies, making them easier to swat.
Cluster flies usually enter homes in fall and winter to hibernate through colder months, often hiding in attics or walls. While they can spread diseases due to their unsanitary nature, they primarily lay eggs in the soil, with larvae that parasitize earthworms. However, they are generally not as harmful as other flies.
